About

The Summit is aimed at creating awareness about the needs of children with high ability and to equip educators with the best practices and tools for nurturing them.

Educators’ Summit Asia ’23 will empower and enable teachers to support the high ability students, (which is the top 10% of any population) in their classroom. Nurturing these students is important to help them discover and reach their potential and also because these students are an asset to their school or institute.

Highly qualified and experienced educators, professors and researchers from more than 6 Asian countries will be sharing their knowledge and experiences during the 2 days of this virtual summit. A variety of topics like how to identify high ability children, support their unique intellectual and emotional needs, create conducive eco-systems within the regular school setup, design advanced differentiated curriculum in the classroom and much more will be addressed.

The summit will also provide multiple opportunities to interact with our delegates and get all your questions answered.

About Giftedness

Children who are gifted are defined as those who demonstrate an advanced ability or potential in one or more specific areas when compared to others of the same age, experience or environment.

Common characteristics of high ability children – Insatiable curiosity Unconventional thinking Natural problem solving ability Learning driven by logic & reasoning.

About 10% students in every class fall into the high ability category and this makes it essential and urgent to recognize and nurture their potential. Most gifted children have a quick grasping ability and need advanced material as they learn faster than the speed assumed by the typical curricula and instructions that are designed for their age. Moreover, they have unique socio-emotional needs and challenges, which when neglected, result in boredom or disruption in the classroom, or isolation due to incompatibility with peers. These issues may lead to gifted children hiding their real potential and underachieving. Alternatively, not addressing the socio-emotional needs of a gifted child can lead to behavioural issues and stress to perform for the child.

Mrs. Malati Kalmadi

Keynote Speaker

Mrs. Malati Kalmadi is the Founding Director for Kaveri Gifted Education Research Centre, which was initiated in 2014. She is also the Managing trustee for the last 30 years, Secretary Kannada Sangha for the last 15 years. She has been the pillar in creating systems in educational institutes much ahead of our times.

Kaveri Institutes has had school counselors for last 25 years and yet again currently she initiated the Kaveri Gifted Centre to set the pioneering work in the field of gifted for the entire Nation bringing all stakeholders together. Her dream is to see that the gifted child in a school should be given the opportunity and gain access to resources and support within the school. Parents of the gifted child and the teachers are also given training and support in Kaveri group of institutes. Her vision is to bring the high learning student’s as leaders and changing agents for the nation.

Ching-chih Kuo

Keynote Speaker

Dr. Kuo is professor of Special Education at National Taiwan Normal University. She has been involved in gifted and talented education for over 40 years. She is experienced in teaching, counselling and administration. Her research projects in terms of giftedness and talent development include the following topics: educational policy, identification, multiple intelligences, teaching models, Over-excitabilities (OE’s), emotional development, metacognition, twice exceptional (2E), brain function, gifted females, gifted preschoolers, and longitudinal study.
Dr. Kuo has published over 100 articles and book chapters that include: “White Matter Network Connectome of Mathematical and Scientific Talents” (Bulletin of Educational Psychology, 2019); “The Correlations among Emotional Development, Over-excitabilities and Personal Maladjustment” (Archives of Psychology, 2019); “A Comparative Study of the Divergent Problem Solving Abilities of Mathematically and Scientifically Talented Students sand Non-gifted Students” (Thinking Skills and Creativity, 2016) and many more. Her honours include the NTNU Outstanding Service Award,2015; MOST’s Subsidy for Distinguished Scholar 2014 ~2022, and the MOE Prize for Excellent Educators & Officers, 2013. Dr. Kuo is currently president of the Asia-Pacific Federation on Giftedness (APFG).

Prof. Manabu Sumida

Dr. Manabu Sumida is Professor of Science Education Department at Faculty of Education, Associate Director of Institute for International Relations, and Special Aide to the President, Ehime University in Japan. He holds PhD in Science Education from Hiroshima University. He was a visiting researcher at University of Georgia in 1998 and visiting scholar at the University of Cambridge from 2012 to 2013. He was a committee member of the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 2003, and the OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2006 and 2015.
He received International Contribution Award in 2016 and Academic Award in 2018 from Japan Society for Science Education (JSSE). He also received Ryoji Noyori (Nobel Laureate in Chemistry in 2001) Education Award for his innovative special science programme for gifted young children (Kids Academia) in 2013. He is currently, President of Japan Society for Science Education (JSSE) , Regional Representative for Asia of the International Council of Association for Science Education (ICASE), and Executive Committee Member of Asia-Pacific Federation on Giftedness (APFG).

Professor Jyoti Sharma

Panelist

Jyoti Sharma is a Professor in Education at Cluster Innovation Centre, University of Delhi. She is the Joint Director at the Cluster Innovation Centre and Institute of Lifelong Learning at the University of Delhi. Dr Sharma works extensively with gifted (high-ability) learners in schools all across the country and with international research partners. She worked as an investigator and co-investigator for the Gifted Education Project at the national level. These efforts contributed to support for gifted students at National Education Policy 2020.
She has been involved in mentoring mathematically gifted students. Her areas of interest are Mathematics Curriculum and Innovation & Creativity in Mathematics pedagogy. She has been part of many national committees at the policy and implementation levels. She has been involved in several academic initiatives under NCERT and different school boards. She specializes in Mathematics Pedagogy and works towards inclusive mathematics teaching practices through new-age media. Presently she is the principal investigator of the Effective Education vertical of the Delhi Science and Technology Knowledge Cluster initiated by the Office of Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India.

Mantak YUEN

Mantak Yuen (Ph.D.) is an associate professor and director of the Laboratory and Program in Creativity and Talent Development at the Centre for Advancement in Inclusive and Special Education, Faculty of Education, University of Hong Kong. He is a registered counseling and educational psychologist. His professional interests are in school counseling, gifted education, and life career development. He coordinates the Master of Education specialism in Gifted Education and Talent Development. He is a Hong Kong China delegate to the World Council for Gifted and Talented Children and the Vice-President of the Asia-Pacific Federation on Giftedness.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Usanee Anuruthwong

Panelist

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Usanee Anuruthwong is one the pioneers in the field of gifted education in Thailand. She has worked in the field of gifted and special education since 1980 as a senior instructor, researcher, counselor, author, national committee (s). She has help to established many national organizations and local organizations to support children with special needs and the early childhood such as: special school for the gifted, Association for developing Human Potentials and Giftedness, Institute for Developing Thinking Skills, Parents Club and many more.
She is one of the key persons to develop National Act, National Plan and National Policy for the gifted and the Chairperson to develop National Plan for the Early childhood in Thailand. Dr. Usanee Anuruthwong has published more than 400 articles for teachers and parents, 15 books, and 33 research studies. She is the President of the Asia-Pacific Federation on Giftedness (in 2018-2022) and Chair of the Association for Developing Human Potentials and Giftedness.

Dr. Devasena Desai

Dr. Desai has her doctoral degree from Jnana Prabodhini’s Institute of Psychology (JPIP) Pune, in association with Utrecht University, The Netherlands in 2005. Currently she is the Associate Director for Kaveri Gifted education and research centre since its inception from 2014 and Kaveri counseling and empowerment center since June 2022 for Kaveri group of Institutes.
She has been pioneer in setting up systems by incorporating giftedness in Kaveri schools. She has been a parent counselor and master trainer for almost 27 years. She was awarded the Belin-Blank Fellowship in 2011, to attend their course in gifted education from Belin Blank Center at University of Iowa, USA. She holds the position of Adjunct Lecturer at the University of Iowa, for the past 5 years. She is associated with the European Council for Higher ability (ECHA) and has presented research papers in Europe in the area of Giftedness. Dr. Desai facilitates the Kaveri Gifted Team for the past 8 years in formulating ideas for different gifted programs and services for gifted children, teachers and parents. She is currently also working in advocacy and creating the policy in giftedness for India. Devasena has worked in different capacity across Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Dubai. She has initiated the Kaveri Youtube channel and the ‘Being Gifted’ Podcast.

Dr. Finarya Legoh

Dr. Finarya Legoh is a senior lecturer at Faculty of Engineering of University of Indonesia for building technology and sustainable architecture. Since 2019 Finarya has been working at Indonesian Academy of Sciences (AIPI) as the Head of International Relation & Funding. Her PhD in Applied Acoustics came from the University of Salford, UK. She worked at the Agency for Assessment & Application of Technology (BPPT) in 1982-1999, in research & management positions, then in 2012- 2019 she apprehended as Principal Engineer.
She has many trainings and experience as science communicator, and as advisor and trainer for researchers. In 2000-2012 she worked at the Ministry of Research and Technology of Indonesia, as leaders to disseminate and communicate S&T to public and stakeholders. Finarya was appointed as Focal Points / Committees of various programs in ASEAN, ASEAN+3, APEC, in gifted in science for youths and educators. Since 2022, Finarya has been selected as the Chair of Special Committee in SHARE (Science, Health, Agriculture, Risk and Environment) Communication within AASSA (the Association of Academies & Societies of Sciences in Asia). She is also the member of working group of Southeast Asia Science Advice Network (SEA SAN) since 2020. During G20 Indonesia Presidency 2022, Finarya was the Secretary of Science20.

Dr. Letchmi Devi Ponnusamy

Dr Letchmi is currently Assistant Dean, Professional & Leadership Development at the Graduate and Professional Learning Programme Office (NIE) and Senior Lecturer with the Psychology and Child & Human Development AG. As Assistant Dean, she oversees leadership programmes for school leaders and middle managers. As a senior lecturer, she teaches for the High Abilities Studies Master of Education Programme and courses on differentiated instruction, pedagogical practices, and curriculum innovation for both pre- and in-service levels.
As a practitioner, Letchmi has handled school-based curriculum development and evaluation in her previous role as her school’s Assistant Head of Department for High Ability Learners. Her research areas include differentiation, talent and giftedness, concept-based pedagogy, and teacher agency. She has earned multiple MOE–NIE funded research grants for differentiation, critical and creative thinking, and curriculum for high ability studies. She has also supervised Masters and Doctoral projects in high ability studies and teacher professional development. Dr. Letchmi has also presented several keynote speeches, published several articles and book chapters, and co-edited a book published by Springer, Singapore entitled “Curriculum for High Ability Learners: Issues, Trends and Practices.

Dr Paromita Roy

Paromita Roy, is a psychologist and is the Deputy Director of Jagadis Bose National Science Talent Search (JBNSTS), Kolkata, with more than 25 years of experience working with high ability students of science. She is involved in program development for high ability science students and teacher training development. Her research interests include talent identification and nurture, developing concepts of giftedness, women and girls in STEM. She is currently collaborating with College of William and Mary, Virginia, USA and Center for Talented Youth Dublin City University, Ireland on psychology of talented students.
Paromita Roy was a joint convener of India’s “First International Conference of Gifted Minds” India where she coordinated bringing in 19 international experts from Hungary, Germany, USA, UK, Israel, South Korea, Japan, UAE, China, 2014. She has contributed two chapters; in “Gifted Education in Asia: Problems and Prospects”, published by IAP, USA in 2015, and “International Perspectives on Science Education for the Gifted: Key issues and challenges” published by Routledge in 2016. She has spoken at conferences in New Delhi, Maharashtra, Bangalore, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Taiwan, China and Croatia. She has been an international referee for the Asia Pacific Forum for the Science Talented (APFST) for 2017 and 2018 and is a recognized mentor of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, for gifted science students in India.
